The Sunken Lounge

Drink in the spirit of the glamorous Sixties with retro cocktails and swizzle sticks once enjoyed in-flight.

The best martinis at JFK Airport await you! Gerber Group — owner-operator of 12 innovative cocktail bars and restaurants in New York, Atlanta and Santiago, Chile — operates The Sunken Lounge, the premier bar at the landmark 512-room TWA Hotel. A great deal of history has been made in the Eero Saarinen-designed Sunken Lounge: Crowds gathered there to watch the Beatles arrive in the United States in 1965!

The Sunken Lounge is open daily from 11 AM to 1 AM. See the menu.

Occasionally The Sunken Lounge hosts private events. The Sunken Lounge will be closed at the following time for a private event:

  • May 17, 2020 from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM EST

In The Sunken Lounge, floor-to-ceiling windows provide views of the hotel’s 1958 “Connie” airplane (parked on the tarmac just outside) while overhead a split flap departures board by Solari di Udine displays custom messages. Looking to relax post-flight? Recline on the lounge’s upholstered benches and admire the authentic sparkling white penny tile and original Chili Pepper Red carpet.

Naturally, Gerber Group stocks the menu with 1960s cocktail favorites, including the Old Fashioned (whiskey and bitters). To honor TWA, Gerber Group offers The Sunken Lounge Martini (served with TWA flight wings!) and The Howard Hughes (Hennessy V.S.O.P Privilège, Crème de Violette, fresh lemon juice and ginger).

Swizzle sticks based on retro TWA designs.
Stir it up: Swizzle sticks based on TWA designs make every cocktail a conversation piece.

Also in the mix: Original signature cocktails — including the Come Fly With Me, inspired by Frank Sinatra’s 1958 album cover — garnished with a rainbow of swizzle sticks. The stirrers are modeled after TWA’s original sets highlighting its travel destinations (Africa, Greece, England) and its own fleet (propellers!). Guests can also order from an expansive collection of small-batch spirits, carefully-curated wines and regionally brewed craft beers, all complemented by elevated bar fare.
